The Hong Kong Friends of Winchester College is an association of Winchester College alumni, parents, and friends. The College’s distinguished entry from Hong Kong has long been a source of pride and support, and the association has continued to grow in number and importance. Brian David M B Li chairs the Executive Committee. He aims to help the College and its alumni build a better community through fundraising, alumni relations, and other activities. Hong Kong Friends of Winchester College is a registered charity, and gifts to The Friends are tax-deductible for Hong Kong taxpayers.
Nancy Chuang, an associate producer at a local TV news show, met Ray Wong, founder of Hong Kong Indigenous, a localist group demanding autonomy and preferential policies from China. The two had met in Taipei the previous fall, and Nancy had messaged Ray in advance of the trip. She had been spending time with Taiwanese independence activists and was interested in the parallels between Hong Kong and Taiwan. So, she decided to travel to Hong Kong, hoping to meet with a fellow localist activist.

Nancy’s journey to Hong Kong began on the night of the protest, when the Chinese government imposed a national-security law that would allow police to track anyone who wanted to escape. In order to keep from being tracked, Nancy and Baggio were in a position to help each other. The first one, Nancy, was in Taipei when a protest broke out. The two became close friends, talking politics and laughing around when they went out.
Nancy met some of Ray’s Hong Kong Friends whenever she visited the city. She found them passionate and smart, and gained some interesting insights into Hong Kong’s political life. After the Umbrella Movement failed, the pro-democracy opposition split further. One camp demanded more democratic rights under a single country, two systems, and one democracy, while the other chose open confrontation and any means necessary to achieve their goals. Nancy decided to join them and support the cause.
Nancy was especially pleased to visit the Prudential Hotel, located across the road from the Australia Dairy Company and the Star Ferry. She loved the megapulse and the seaside and city lights at the same time. She even developed an attachment to the city’s streets. The Prudential Hotel was a wonderful place to stay in Hong Kong. The city has many cultural and art attractions, and Nancy became quite the ‘City Girl’ in this new city.
